Symptoms of calcium deficiency in children

(hypocalcemia) in children include muscle issues like twitching, cramps, and weakness, as well as neurological signs such as irritability, lethargy, and seizures. Chronic, severe deficiency can lead to bone problems like rickets, causing bowed legs and thickened wrists, while long-term issues can include delayed growth and dental problems like weak enamel.

Neurological & Behavioral Symptoms

Irritability and fussiness: Children may seem unusually grumpy or difficult to soothe.

Lethargy: They might appear sluggish or have a general lack of energy.

Jitteriness and tremors: Shaking or trembling can be a sign of low calcium levels.

Seizures: In severe cases, particularly in infants, seizures can occur.

Poor concentration: Cognitive issues can arise from chronic deficiency.

Musculoskeletal Symptoms

Muscle cramps, twitching, and spasms: Involuntary muscle contractions can be a key symptom.

Muscle weakness: A general lack of strength can occur, making it hard to move or walk.

Bowed legs and other deformities: In children with rickets (caused by low calcium), bones may become soft, leading to bowed legs, knock-knees, and thickened wrists and ankles.

Bone pain: Aching in the legs, back, or pelvis is possible.

Delayed growth: Insufficient calcium can hinder normal skeletal development.

Other Symptoms

Poor feeding: Babies with low calcium may refuse to eat.

Dental problems: Weak enamel, brittle teeth, and potential tooth decay can result from calcium being pulled from the teeth to maintain blood levels.

Dry skin and hair: Skin may become dry, and hair can become brittle or fall out.
