Hematology Tests

1. Full Haemogram (TBC, CBC) (20 minutes, Cost: ksh 1800):

   - Purpose: Provides a comprehensive analysis of the blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

   - Importance: Helps in diagnosing infections, anemia, blood disorders, and general health monitoring.

2. Blood Grouping (10 minutes, Cost: ksh 500):

   - Purpose: Identifies your blood type (A, B, AB, O, and rhesus factor).

   - Importance: Crucial for safe blood transfusions, organ transplants, and for pregnant women to avoid complications such as Rh incompatibility.

3. Haemoglobin Level (HB) (20 minutes, Cost: ksh 500):

   - Purpose: Determines the amount of hemoglobin in the blood.

   - Importance: Essential for diagnosing anemia or other conditions affecting the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood.

4. Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) (1 hour, Cost: ksh 500):

   - Purpose: Measures the rate at which red blood cells settle in a tube over a specific time.

   - Importance: Indicates inflammation, aiding in the detection of infections, autoimmune diseases, or certain cancers.

Microbiology Tests

5. Stool for Ova & Cysts (3 days, Cost: 2,500):

   - Purpose: Detects the presence of parasitic eggs or cysts in stool.

   - Importance: Diagnoses parasitic infections like tapeworms or protozoa, which can disrupt intestinal health.

6. Urinalysis (MC5) (3 days, Cost: 2,500):

   - Purpose: Examines the physical and chemical aspects of urine.

   - Importance: Helps in diagnosing urinary tract infections, kidney issues, or monitoring health in conditions like diabetes.

7. High Vaginal Swab (HVS) Microscopy (3 days, Cost: 2,500):

   - Purpose: Collects and examines samples from the vagina.

   - Importance: Detects vaginal infections, including fungal, bacterial, and other pathogens causing discomfort.

8. Sputum Gram Stain (Cost: 2,800):

   - Purpose: Analyzes sputum samples for bacterial pathogens.

   - Importance: Identifies lung infections, such as pneumonia, and determines causative bacteria.

9. Mantoux Test (1 hour, Cost: 2,800):

   - Purpose: A skin test to detect tuberculosis exposure.

   - Importance: Critical for diagnosing latent or active tuberculosis, especially in high-risk populations.

10. Urine for Culture & Sensitivity (C/S) (20 minutes, Cost: 1500):

    - Purpose: Identifies bacteria causing UTIs and their antibiotic susceptibility.

    - Importance: Ensures precision in treating urinary infections.

11. Sputum ZN Staining (AFB) (3 days, Cost: 2,800):

    - Purpose: Detects acid-fast bacilli, such as those causing tuberculosis.

    - Importance: Essential for diagnosing and managing TB.

12. Throat Swab Culture & Sensitivity (3 days, Cost: 2,800):

    - Purpose: Collects samples from the throat to detect bacterial infections.

    - Importance: Identifies infections like strep throat and helps guide antibiotic treatment.

13. KOH Preparation (10 days, Cost: 4,800):

    - Purpose: Examines skin, hair, or nail samples for fungal infections.

    - Importance: Diagnoses fungal conditions and guides antifungal treatment.

Specialized Tests

14. HbA1C (Glycosylated Hemoglobin) (1 day, Cost: 3,000):

    - Purpose: Measures blood sugar levels over three months.

    - Importance: Vital for diagnosing and managing diabetes, ensuring effective blood sugar control.

15. Coombs Test (Direct/Indirect) (2 hours, Cost: 3,500):

    - Purpose: Detects antibodies causing destruction of red blood cells.

    - Importance: Diagnoses hemolytic anemia and ensures safe blood transfusions, especially during pregnancy.

16. Blood for Culture & Sensitivity (C/S):

    - Purpose: Determines bloodstream infections and antibiotic sensitivity.

    - Importance: Helps identify the source of bloodstream infections and choose the most effective antibiotics.

17. HB Electrophoresis:

    - Purpose: Identifies abnormal hemoglobin variants.

    - Importance: Diagnoses genetic blood disorders like sickle cell anemia or beta-thalassemia.

This comprehensive overview emphasizes the critical role of these tests in maintaining and improving health. Each serves a unique purpose, enabling clearer diagnosis and effective treatment across various health concerns. Always prioritize diagnostic accuracy for total health care!
