PATIENT PREPARATION FOR ULTRASOUND EXAMINATIONS

Pelvic Ultrasound Scan

– Drink 1–1.5 litres of water 1 hour before the scan.
– Do not urinate until after the examination.
– Full bladder required.



Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVS)

– Empty your bladder before the scan.
– No fasting required.
– Best performed after menstruation for fertility assessment.



Pregnancy Scan

Below 12 weeks

– Drink 1 litre of water.
– Full bladder required.

After 12 weeks

– Usually no preparation required.



Follicular Monitoring

– Full bladder for abdominal scan.
– Empty bladder for transvaginal scan.
– Usually begins between Day 9–12 of the menstrual cycle.



Prostate Ultrasound

– Drink 1 litre of water.
– Do not urinate.
– Full bladder required.



KUB Ultrasound

– Drink 1–1.5 litres of water.
– Do not urinate.
– Full bladder required.



Testicular Ultrasound

– No fasting.
– No bladder preparation.
– Wear comfortable clothing.



Scrotal Doppler Ultrasound

– No fasting.
– No bladder preparation.



Breast Ultrasound

– No fasting.
– Do not apply lotions, creams, powders or deodorant to the breast or armpit area.



Thyroid Ultrasound

– No preparation required.
– Remove necklaces before examination.



Liver Ultrasound

– Fast for 6–8 hours.
– Water is allowed.



Gallbladder Ultrasound

– Fast for 6–8 hours.
– Avoid food, milk, tea and chewing gum.



Pancreas Ultrasound

– Fast for 6–8 hours.
– Avoid carbonated drinks.



Spleen Ultrasound

– Fast for 6 hours.
– Water allowed.



Abdominal Ultrasound

– Fast for 6–8 hours.
– Drink water if bladder assessment is required.



Soft Tissue Ultrasound

– No preparation required.



Hernia Ultrasound

– No fasting.
– You may be asked to cough or strain during the examination.



Penile Ultrasound

– No fasting.
– No special preparation.
– Medication may be administered during Doppler studies to evaluate penile blood flow.



Upper & Lower Limb Doppler

– No fasting.
– Wear loose clothing.



Echocardiography (Heart Scan)

– No fasting.
– No special preparation.
